This week, for the release of Detective Pikachu, I have made the pikachu! Ever since I heard about this movie, I had to know more about it before deciding to watch it.

Believe it or not, I got the game just to play it through before watching it. I can safely say that the movie alludes to the game in accurate blips; the talking pikachu concept is straight from the game.

Pikachu was surprisingly hard to make, because every time I sketched it, my old drawing habits from 9-yr old me would show through. I had to really try to break the habit; this is also why I have a hard time making eevee. It still shows a bit in the face, but I’m satisfied how it turned out.

This was the best attempt at drawing Pikachu

For the head, I wanted to make a bean shape that does a slight poke-out at the nose and mouth area – I’m glad I wrote it in my book, because I sort of forget how I did this part. It was by using a combination of double crochets and a sequence of increasing and decreasing that created the face. If I ever decide to make Eevee, I’ll be looking at this section for the face.

The tail was made by creating a “flattened round” out of a chain; every new stepped section was made by cutting the round by half and then chaining a new section to continue the cycle. I would say that this was a neat method to try out – the tail turned out fairly sturdy with a distinct zig-zag shape.

The other parts were straightforward to make, and as usual, I stitched the eyes, nose, and mouth. Compared to some of my other plush toys, Pikachu wasn’t too complicated; it was just the fact that I had drawn Pikachu so much in my childhood that it was a hard habit to break.
